Strength testing for pill

Using compression to test the durability of the tablet ensures that the tablets can withstand multiple forces during the manufacturing, packaging, shipping and handling processes.

A typical test requires a pill to be either compressed to failure or compressed to a certain force and checked for puncture.

Although the test itself is relatively straightforward, having the appropriately sized compression platen or probe is critical to ensure the pill does not slip out from under load, and that the force is properly distributed over the surface area of the pill. Because the size of a tablet is quite small, the test tablet may get inaccurate results if there is a mistake in choosing testing tools.

To simulate a compressed tablet that may occur during production, transportation, etc., it is advisable to test it at a speed range. Using select inputs and associated values in Bluehill Universal software, users can select simulation conditions (i.e. packaging versus processing) using the simple drop-down menu in the Soft will change the testing speed.

In addition to test speed, we recommend using at least a 2 inch compression platen on the base of the system, and a smaller probe on top to closely match the pill’s diameter.
